It seems to work much better in xfce as far as I can tell, probably in gnome too :).

looks good, but there shouldn't be any color in them :).

When I'm making these icons I limit myself to a #4D4D4DFF background and a gradient from #FFFFFFFF to #ABABABFF
(in RGBA if anyone's wondering why there's 8 digits)

These are really nice but with this sort of monochrome style, if the set isn't complete, it just doesn't work.
